apaśyaṃ gopām anipadyamānam ā ca parā ca pathibhiś carantam
sa sadhrīcīs sa viṣūcīr vasāna ā varīvartti bhuvaneṣv antar iti /
"I saw the herdsman who never stumbles, wandering hither and thither along the paths; / Clothing himself in those that converge and those that diverge, he keeps rolling within the worlds."
3.37.2
apaśyaṃ gopām anipadyamānam iti
prāṇo vai gopāḥ
sa hīdaṃ sarvam anipadyamāno gopāyati /
"I saw the herdsman who never stumbles": breath is indeed the herdsman, for, never stumbling, it guards all this.
3.37.3
ā ca parā ca pathibhiś carantam iti
tad ye ca ha vā ime prāṇā amī ca raśmaya etair ha vā eṣa etad ā ca parā ca pathibhiś carati /
"Wandering hither and thither along the paths": both these breaths and those rays—along these paths this [breath] wanders hither and thither.
3.37.4
sa sadhrīcīs sa viṣūcīr vasāna iti
sadhrīcīś ca hy eṣa etad viṣūcīś ca prajā vaste /
"Clothing himself in those that converge and those that diverge": for it clothes itself in these creatures that converge and diverge.
3.37.5
ā varīvartti bhuvaneṣv antar iti
eṣa hy evaiṣu bhuvaneṣv antar āvarīvartti /
"He keeps rolling within the worlds": for it indeed keeps rolling within these worlds.
3.37.6
sa eṣa indra udgīthaḥ
sa yadaiṣa indra udgītha āgacchati naivodgātuś copagātṝṇāṃ ca vijñāyate
ita evordhvas svar udeti
sa upari mūrdhno lelāyati /
He is this Indra, the udgītha. When this Indra, the udgītha, arrives, neither [the voice] of the udgātṛ nor of the accompanying choristers is distinguished. Directly from here upward rises the tone; it vibrates above the crown of the head.
3.37.7
sa vidyād āgamad indro neha kaś cana pāpmā nyaṅgaḥ pariśekṣyata iti
tasmin ha na kaś cana papmā nyaṅgaḥ pariśiṣyate /
He should know: "Indra has arrived; no evil trace will be left here." In him no evil trace is left.
3.37.8
tad etad abhrātṛvyaṃ sāma
na ha vā indraḥ kaṃ cana bhrātṛvyam paśyate
sa yathendro na kaṃ cana bhrātṛvyam paśyata evam eva [na] kaṃ cana bhrātṛvyam paśyate ya etad evaṃ vedātho yasyaivaṃ vidvān udgāyati /
ṣaṣṭhe 'nuvāke navamaḥ khaṇḍaḥ /
ṣaṣṭho 'nuvākas samāptaḥ //
This is the rival-free sāman. Indra indeed sees no rival. Just as Indra sees no rival, even so he sees [no] rival who knows this thus, and also he for whom one who knows thus sings the udgītha. / Ninth subsection in the sixth anuvāka. / The sixth anuvāka is finished.
