27.p1

Now the Bārhata [sāman] with the honey-dripping finale.

27.p2

Therefore it is performed on the Bārhata day. Moreover, the end of essences is honey; the end of worlds is the heavenly world.

27.p3

[Saying:] 'This day is the end; by means of the final sāman let us reach the final heavenly world.'

27.p4

Now the two Krauñca [sāmans].

27.p5

Kruṅ Āṅgirasa found the day, as it were, like a wagon pole.

27.p6

Like a wagon pole, as it were, is this day, which is the sixth.

27.p7

Therefore the two are performed on the sixth day.

27.p8

They also call them the Udvat and the Śāmmada.

27.p9

By means of the Udvat, the gods stepped upward to the heavenly world.

27.p10

In that they stepped upward to the heavenly world, that is the udvat-nature of the Udvat.

27.p11

This is a heaven-granting sāman.

27.164

Upward indeed to the heavenly world he steps by it, who knows thus. Now the Śāmmada. When the gods had been victorious, these worlds, fearing, stepped away. They desired: 'May these worlds turn toward us; let them not step away from us.' They saw this sāman. With it they praised. Thereupon these worlds turned toward them; then they became non-departing from them. They said, 'These worlds have truly rejoiced for our peace.' That is the śāmmada-nature of the Śāmmada. These worlds rejoice in peace for him, these worlds turn toward him, these worlds do not step away from him, who knows thus. It has an upward-reaching iḷā; it is the form of the Bṛhat on the Bārhata day; thereby it is complete in form. 'Flow here, purify these riches, generous drop, run forth in the reservoir; of whom, as the sun, the wind does not [surpass] the speed, even Purumedha set a hero for the swift runner'—in this [verse] is the form of the Revatīs.

27.165

On them is the Śnauṣṭa. By this indeed Agni Vaiśvānara shone. They sit at a sacrificial session [saying], 'May we shine.' They indeed cause him to shine by this. Now Agni Vaiśvānara was previously just like these embers. He desired: 'May sparks, flames, be born to me.' He saw this sāman. With it he praised. Thereupon sparks, flames, were born to him. Truly these sparks of his are flames. His splendor, spiritual luster, was then born. Splendid, endowed with spiritual luster, possessing sparks he becomes, who knows thus. And it becomes, as it were, restrained, a form of the end. For this day is the end. Just as one would call after a person going off without guidance, 'Come here, do not go beyond!', just so the stomas, having been attained by this, call after from the end.
