51.273

It has a four-syllable finale. Cattle are indeed four-footed, / and cattle are the chandomas, for the securing of cattle. / "Hither indeed, quick-moving, born..."— / thus there are [verses] containing the word "born" (janadvat). / That which contains the word "born" is the characteristic form of the Jagatī; / this day belongs to the Jagatī. / "Prepared with cows, breaking through, / the drop the gods approached; / flow for us, O Soma, as a blessing for the cow; milk out swelling refreshment; / increase the ocean worthy of praise"—thus they contain the word "cow" (gomat) and cattle (paśumat), for the securing of cattle; / for cattle are the chandomas. / "Him let our songs increase"— / for this day, which is forty-eightfold, is increased.

51.273.p1

On these [verses is chanted] the Śrudhīya.

51.273.p2

Prajāpati created the sacrifice.

51.274

He gave it to the gods. / Fearing exhaustion, it ran away. / The gods desired: "May it listen to us!" / They saw this sāman. / With it they called after it: "Hearken! (środhiya)". / It listened. / They said to it: "Turn back to us!" / "I fear exhaustion," [it said]. / "Do not [fear]," they said. / "Then place your trust (śraddhā) in me," [it said]. / By saying "Hearken!" (środhiya), they placed trust in it. / They summoned it down, saying: "Come here!" (ehyā). / Then the sacrifice did not escape from them; / from there it turned back. / The sacrifice is as if escaped now on the ninth day. / That there is the Śrudhīya here, thereby they summon down the sacrifice together. / Therefore one should chant "środhiya" in the first [verse], and "środhema" in the two following [verses]. / Moreover, for whomever one might desire long life (jīvātu), him one should summon down with this very [sāman].
