52.275

Now the Daivānīka. / The gods and the Asuras were contending. / The gods desired: "With Agni as our battle-front (anīka) may we conquer the Asuras!" / They saw this sāman; / with it they praised: / "Auspicious to us is Agni when invoked"— / thus they made Agni their battle-front; / "Auspicious is the gift, O fortunate one, auspicious the rite, / auspicious also the praises; / make our mind auspicious in the slaying of Vṛtra, whereby you are victorious in battles"— / thus they overcame them in battles; / "Loosen the firm [bows] of those who display great arrogance"— / thus whatever vital power, whatever strength they had, they struck down with this; / "May we win your favors!"— / thus they surmounted them. / Then with Agni as their battle-front they conquered the Asuras. / That is the battle-front quality of the Daivānīka (divine army). / This sāman is victorious and slays the rival. / He is victorious and slays his spiteful rival, who knows thus.

52.276

Now the Idhmavāha. / The ṛṣis, going to the heavenly world, left Idhmavāha, the wood-gatherer, behind, dead, alone in the forest. / He desired: "May I fly up after to the heavenly world; may I unite with the fellow sacrificers!" / He reflected: "Come, let me praise the fellow sacrificers themselves! / They, praised, will act in such a way that I shall hear them." / He saw this triplet; / with it he praised them: / "Those who kindle the fire, who spread the sacrificial grass continuously, / whose youthful ally is Indra; / high is their fuel-wood, abundant their praise, broad their sacrificial post-chip, / whose youthful ally is Indra; / without battle, with warrior companions the hero drives the cattle pen enclosed by strife, / whose youthful ally is Indra." / Praised, they acted for him in such a way that he heard them. / He heard the sound of their whips. / He saw this sāman; / with it he praised:

they adorn the bright one with their courses."

52.277

"...they adorn the bright one with their courses: come, O, him, come, O, come, O, indeed!" / "Come!"—thus they called him up in the heavenly world. / Then he united with the fellow sacrificers. / Having praised with this very sāman, he ascended to the heavenly world. / "Those who kindle the fire, who spread the sacrificial grass continuously, / whose youthful ally is Indra..."— / thus he ascended after to the heavenly world. / This sāman leads to heaven. / He attains the heavenly world who knows thus. / Because Idhmavāha saw it, therefore it is called the Aidhmavāha. / Now the Traikakubha, whose Brāhmaṇa is explained, a sāman of three faculties: / the verses are to Indra, the sāman is to Indra, "Indra" is the finale. / Three are the faculties in man: oneself, offspring, cattle; / these he grasps in himself by means of it. / "The singers sing of you, the reciters recite the song, / the Brahmins have held you high like a pole, O you of a hundred resolves!"— / that which has hundred and that which has thousand is the characteristic form of the chandomas; / for cattle are the chandomas.
