12.7.1
sa stute pavamāna etam japam japet /
When the pavamāna [laud] is chanted, he should murmur this murmur:
12.7.2
upahūtā devā asya somasya pavamānasya vicakṣaṇasya bhakṣa upa mām devā hvayantām asya somasya pavamānasya vicakṣaṇasya bhakṣe manasā tvā bhakṣayāmi vācā tvā bhakṣayāmi prāṇena tvā bhakṣayāmi cakṣuṣā tvā bhakṣayāmi śrotreṇa tvā bhakṣayāmi iti / (soma: ekādaśinī)
'Invited are the gods to the consumption of this purifying, clear-seeing Soma; may the gods invite me to the consumption of this purifying, clear-seeing Soma; with mind I consume thee, with speech I consume thee, with breath I consume thee, with sight I consume thee, with hearing I consume thee.'
12.7.3
sa eṣa devaiḥ samupahavaḥ /
That is the shared invitation with the gods.
12.7.4
tathā ha asya asau somo rājā vicakṣaṇaś candramā bhakṣo bhakṣito bhavati / (soma: ekādaśinī)
Thus king Soma, the clear-seeing moon, becomes consumed as a portion for him,
12.7.5
yam amum devā bhakṣam bhakṣayanti /
which portion yonder the gods consume.
12.7.6
atha paśuḥ /
Now, the animal [sacrifice].
xii. 6. Now as to the victim. The victim is clearly Soma, for if it were not offered it would be as it were a water drinking; thereby he makes firm the pressings. In that they proceed with the omentum, thereby is the morning pressing made firm; in that they cook, in that they proceed with the cake at the animal sacrifice, thereby is the midday pressing made firm; in that they proceed with this (victim) at the third pressing, thereby is the third pressing made firm. This is the making firm of the pressings. The deities who drink the Soma and those who share the victim—there are thirty-three Soma drinking deities who depend on the Soma libations, eight Vasus, eleven Rudras, twelve Ādityas, Indra as the thirty-second, Prajāpati as the thirty-third; then also thirty-three who share the victim—both of these sets are delighted. Of this (victim) which is offered some say ‘It should be for Indra and Agni’, saying ‘All the gods are Indra and Agni; thus by it he delights all the gods.’ But others say ‘This (victim) should be for Agni, the cakes are for Indra; thus Indra and Agni have equal shares.’ ‘Agni's is the morning pressing, this (victim) is offered at the morning pressing; they take for another that which is Agni's who make it have another for its deity; it is as if one were to take for another what is another's; further the year is alone for those who perform a session of a year, (the victim) is for Agni only; it should not change,’ so some say. In the teaching (of Kauṣītaki) (the victim) is determined as for Agni:
12.7.7
soma eva eṣa pratyakṣam yat paśuḥ / (soma: ekādaśinī)
This animal is manifestly Soma itself.
12.7.8
udaka peyam iva hi syād yad eṣa na ālabhyeta /
For it would be like a drinking of water if this [animal] were not seized.
12.7.9
savanāny etena tīvrī karoti / (soma: ekādaśinī)
By means of this he makes the pressings strong.
12.7.10
tad yad vapayā caranti /
When they perform [the offering] with the omentum,
12.7.11
tena prātaḥ savanam tīvrī kṛtam / (soma: ekādaśinī)
by that the morning pressing is made strong.
12.7.12
yat śrapayanti yat paśu puroḍāśena caranti /
In that they cook [the animal's meat] and in that they proceed with the animal cake,
12.7.13
tena mādhyaṃdinam savanam tīvrī kṛtam / (soma: ekādaśinī)
thereby the midday pressing is intensified.
12.7.14
atha yad enena tṛtīya savane pracaranti /
Then, in that they proceed with it at the third pressing,
12.7.15
tena tṛtīya savanam tīvṛī kṛtam / (soma: ekādaśinī)
thereby the third pressing is intensified.
12.7.16
sa eṣa savanānām eva tīvrī kāraḥ /
This indeed is the intensification of the pressings.
12.7.17
yāś ca somapā devatāḥ / (soma: ekādaśinī)
And whatever deities are Soma-drinkers,
12.7.18
yāś ca paśu bhājanāḥ /
and whatever deities share in the animal victims,
12.7.19
trayas triṃśad vai somapā devatāḥ / (soma: ekādaśinī)
thirty-three, indeed, are the Soma-drinking deities,
12.7.20
yāḥ soma āhutīr anvāyattāḥ /
who are attached to the Soma libations:
12.7.21
aṣṭau vasava ekādaśa rudrā dvādaśa ādityā indro dvātriṃśaḥ / (soma: ekādaśinī)
eight Vasus, eleven Rudras, twelve Ādityas, Indra the thirty-second,
12.7.22
prajāpatis trayas triṃśaḥ /
Prajāpati the thirty-third.
12.7.23
trayas triṃśat paśu bhājanāḥ /
Thirty-three share in the animal victims.
12.7.24
tā ubhayyaḥ prītā bhavanti yad eṣa ālabhyate / (soma: ekādaśinī)
Both these [groups] become pleased when this [victim] is seized.
