He recites [the section] to the Aśvins;
18.2.6
tad amuṃl lokam āpnoti / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
thereby he wins yonder world.
18.2.7
sauryam kratum śaṃsati /
He recites the section to Sūrya;
18.2.8
asti vai caturtho deva loka āpaḥ /
there is indeed a fourth world of the gods: the Waters.
18.2.9
tam eva asya tena āpnoti /
That one he wins for him thereby.
18.2.10
pragātham śaṃsati / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
He recites a pragātha;
18.2.11
paśavo vai pragātha /
cattle are a pragātha,
18.2.12
paśūnām eva āptyai /
for the obtaining of cattle.
18.2.13
atho prāṇa apānau vai bārhataḥ pragāthaḥ / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
Moreover, the Bārhatapragātha is expiration and inhalation.
18.2.16
dyāvā pṛthivīyam śaṃsati /
He recites [the verse] to Heaven and Earth;
18.2.17
pratiṣṭhe vai dyāvā pṛthivī pratiṣṭhityā eva /
Heaven and Earth are two firm supports, for firm support.
18.2.18
dvipadām śaṃsati /
He recites a Dvipadā;
18.2.19
pratiṣṭhānīyam vai chando dvipadā pratiṣhityā eva / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
the Dvipadā metre is a firm support, for firm support.
18.2.20
bārhaspatyayā paridadhāti /
He concludes with a verse to Bṛhaspati;
18.2.21
brahma vai bṛhaspatiḥ /
Bṛhaspati is the sacred power;
18.2.22
brahmaṇy eva tad antataḥ pratitiṣṭhati / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
in the sacred power he ultimately finds a firm support.
18.2.23
atha eṣā sampad bhavati /
Now this is the metrical computation:
18.2.24
trīṇi gāyatrī śatāni te dve bṛhatī śate / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
three hundred Gāyatrīs, they are two hundred Bṛhatīs;
xviii. 3. Three hundred Gāyatrī verses are two hundred Bṛhatī verses;
18.2.25
saptatim anuṣṭubhaḥ saptatim paṅktayaś catvāriṃśat śatam bṛhatīnām / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
seventy Anuṣṭubhs and seventy Paṅktis are one hundred and forty Bṛhatīs;
seventy Anuṣṭubh and seventy Paṅkti verses are one hundred and forty Bṛhatī verses; deducting a hundred Gāyatrī from three hundred Triṣṭubh verses there are three hundred Bṛhatī verses; the hundred Gāyatrī verses and a hundred Jagatī verses are two hundred Bṛhatī verses; fifty Triṣṭubh and fifty Uṣṇih verses make up a hundred Bṛhatī verses; then there are fifty-seven Bṛhatī verses actually found; the fifty-first and fifty-second Triṣṭubh verses and (the verse) of two Padas are three Bṛhatī verses; thus a thousand Bṛhatīs are made up from a thousand of varied metres. ‘He should not recite over a thousand, nor less than a thousand’ is the rule; the expansion of the Āçvina is however conspicuous. This is a service for Agni; verily he should not fall away from the service for Agni; if he should pass over the service for Agni before the due time, he should apply there whatever in the Āçvina is addressed to two gods in the Ṛcs; in the service for Sūrya (he should use) (the verses) for Soma, the purifying, according to metre, Gāyatrī in Gāyatrī, Triṣṭubh in Triṣṭubh, Jagatī in Jagatī; all that is connected with Sūrya in the place of (the service) for Sūrya; all Pragāthas to Indra in the place of the Pragātha; all to sky and earth in the place of (the hymn) to sky and earth; all (verses) of two Padas in the place of (the verse) of two Padas; all addressed to Bṛhaspati before the final verse. That is whatever of the Ṛcs is not set forth.
18.2.26
trayāṇām triṣṭup śatānām gāyatrī śatam uddhṛtya tāni trīṇi bṛhatī śatāni / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
taking out a hundred Gāyatrīs from three hundred Triṣṭubhs, these are three hundred Bṛhatīs;
18.2.27
tac ca gāyatrī śatam jagatī śatam ca te dve bṛhatī śate /
and that one hundred Gāyatrīs and one hundred Jagatīs, they are two hundred Bṛhatīs;
18.2.28
pañcāśat triṣṭubhaḥ pañcāśad uṣṇihaḥ śatam bṛhatyaḥ sampadyante / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
fifty Triṣṭubhs and fifty Uṣṇihs amount to one hundred Bṛhatīs;
18.2.29
atha yāḥ sapta pañcāśatam bṛhatyo atra eva tāḥ sampannātḥ /
then the fifty-seven Bṛhatīs are fulfilled right here;
18.2.30
atha ye dvāpañcāśyau triṣṭubhau dvipadā ca tās tiro bṛhatyaḥ sampadyante / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
then the two Triṣṭubhs of fifty-two syllables and the Dvipadā amount to the remaining Bṛhatīs.
18.2.31
tan nānāc chandasyānām sahasram sat sahasram bṛhatyaḥ sampadyante /
Thus, being a thousand verses in various metres, they amount to a thousand Bṛhatīs.
18.2.32
na sahasram atiśaṃsen na arvāk sahasrād ity eṣā ha eva sthitiḥ / (soma: aAśvina śastra)
'He should not recite more than a thousand, nor less than a thousand'—such indeed is the rule.
