3.5.1
atha yad uttame prayāje devatāḥ samāvapati /
Now, in that he includes the deities at the last fore-offering,
3.5.2
prayāja bhāja eva enās tat karoti /
he thereby makes them share in the fore-offering.
3.5.3
tad yathā agniḥ sarveṣu havihṣu bhāgī bhavati / (DpM)
Just as Agni is a sharer in all oblations,
3.5.4
evam tad agner bhāge devatā bhāginīḥ karoti /
so he makes the deities sharers in Agni's share.
3.5.5
na atra agnim hotrād ity āha /
Here he does not say, 'Agni from the hotṛ's office'.
3.5.6
paśavo vai prayājāḥ / (DpM)
The fore-offerings are cattle;
3.5.7
rudraḥ sviṣṭakṛt /
Rudra is Sviṣṭakṛt;
3.5.8
na id rudreṇa yajamānasya paśūn prasajāni iti /
[thinking,] 'Lest I attach the sacrificer's cattle to Rudra.'
3.5.9
svāhā devā ājyapā juṣāṇā agna ājyasya vyantv iti ha eka āhuḥ / (DpM)
Some indeed say: 'May the gods, butter-drinkers, being pleased, partake of the butter, O Agni!'
3.5.10
na tathā kuryāt /
He should not do so.
3.5.11
ardham ha vai yajñasya ājyam ardham haviḥ /
Half of the sacrifice is butter, half is the oblation.
3.5.12
sa yadd ha anyatarad brūyāt / (DpM)
If he were to say only one of the two,
3.5.13
ardham ha vai yajñasya samiṣṭam syād ardham asamiṣṭam /
half of the sacrifice would be offered and half unoffered.
3.5.14
tasmāt svāhā devā ājyapā juṣāṇā agna ājyasya haviṣo vyantv ity eva brūyāt / (DpM)
Therefore he should say only: 'May the gods, butter-drinkers, being pleased, partake of the butter, of the oblation, O Agni!'
3.5.15
atha yat paurṇamāsyām vārtraghnāv ājya bhāgau bhavataḥ /
Now, as for the two butter portions being 'slayer of Vṛtra' at the full moon:
iii. 5. In that the butter portions at the full moon offering contain references to the slaying of Vṛtra, it is because Indra slew Vṛtra with the full moon offering. In that they have references to growth at the new moon offering, it is because then the moon becomes destroyed and verily thus does he cause it to swell up and to increase The offering verses in these offerings contain the word 'rejoicing', for they include the same oblations as the fore-offerings. Now 'rejoicing' is the holy power; verily thus by the holy power he offers the oblation to the gods. These offerings are threefold, *ye yajāmahe*, the Nigada, the sound *vaṣaṭ*; the butter portions
3.5.16
paurṇamāsena vā indro vṛtram ahan / (DpM)
Indra slew Vṛtra by means of the full moon [rite].
3.5.17
atha yad amāvāsyāyām vṛdhanvantau /
Then, as for the two possessing 'increase' at the new moon:
3.5.18
kṣayam vā atra candro gacchati /
the moon goes to wane at this time;
3.5.19
tam eva etad āpyāyayati tam vardhayati / (DpM)
he thus makes it swell, he makes it increase.
