8.4.1
śiro vā etad yajñasya yan mahā vīraḥ /
This Mahāvīra is indeed the head of the sacrifice.
viii. 3. The Mahāvīra is the head of the sacrifice; he should not at the first sacrifice place it on the fire; the second sacrifice condescends to him who does not place it on the fire in the first sacrifice. Nevertheless for him who is a learned Brahman he may place it in the fire. It is the self of the sacrifice; verily thus with the self he completes the sacrifice. The Mahāvīra is he yonder that gives heat; verily thus he delights him. Him should he praise with a hundred and one (verses); at a hundred leagues hence he gives heat; with a hundred he attains the journey of a hundred leagues; the hundred and first is the world of the sacrificer; of this self the sacrificer becomes master. The man of whom men speak in the sun is Indra, is Prajāpati, is the holy power; thus herein the sacrificer attains identity of world and union with all the deities. Without taking in breath, should he praise, for the continuity of the breaths, for these breaths are continuous as it were. Both aloud and audibly should he praise; the praise is the breaths, for it is expressed, for it has speech as its deity. He utters in praise verses to Savitṛ first, to secure instigation by Savitṛ; to one instigated by Savitṛ no possible injury happens; (verily thus it serves) to secure freedom from injury.
8.4.2
tan na prathama yajñe pravṛñjyāt /
One should not perform the Pravargya ceremony at a first sacrifice.
8.4.3
upanāmuka u eva enam uttaro yajño bhavati yaḥ prthama yajñe na pravṛṇakti / (soma: pravargya)
The subsequent sacrifice comes readily to him who does not perform the Pravargya ceremony at the first sacrifice.
8.4.4
kāmam tu yo anūcānaḥ śrotriyaḥ syāt tasya pravṛñjyāt /
At will, however, for one who is learned and proficient in Vedic lore, one may perform the Pravargya.
8.4.5
ātmā vai sa yajñasya / (soma: pravargya)
He is indeed the self of the sacrifice.
8.4.6
ātmanā eva tad yajñam samardhayati /
With the self he thus makes the sacrifice complete.
8.4.7
tad asau vai mahā vīro yo asau tapati / (soma: pravargya)
That Mahāvīra is indeed yonder one who burns.
8.4.8
etam eva tat prīṇāti /
Him indeed he thereby propitiates.
8.4.9
tam eka śatena abhiṣṭuyāt /
He should praise him with one hundred and one [verses].
8.4.10
śata yojane ha vā eṣa hitas tapati / (soma: pravargya)
He indeed burns placed at a distance of a hundred yojanas.
8.4.11
sa śatena eva enam śata yojanam adhvānam samaśnute /
With a hundred [verses] he reaches him over the path of a hundred yojanas.
8.4.12
atha yā eka śatatamī sa yajamāna lokaḥ / (soma: pravargya)
Then that which is the hundred and first is the world of the sacrificer.
8.4.13
tam etam ātmānam yajamā no abhisambhavati /
Unto this self the sacrificer attains.
8.4.14
yam etam āditye puruṣam vedayante / (soma: pravargya)
Whom they make known as this person in the sun,
8.4.15
sa indraḥ sa prajāpatis tad brahma /
he is Indra, he is Prajāpati, he is Brahman.
8.4.16
tad atra eva yajamānaḥ sarvāsām devatānām salokatām sāyujyam āpnoti / (soma: pravargya)
Here indeed the sacrificer attains identity of world and union with all the deities.
