25.3.1

“With what splendor, having the same age, sharing the same nest” is the Marutvatīya hymn.

25.3.2

Through this form: “splendor” [means] “light”.

25.3.3

“Exalt that ram, finding the sun” is in Jagatī metre; “thou hast supported the heavenly [beings] to see the sun” contains [the word] “sun”.

25.3.4

That is the characteristic form of this day.

25.3.5

In this Triṣṭubh [hymn], “The fierce one was born for strength, for haste”, he inserts the nivid.

25.3.6

Through this form: “dispel the darkness, fill the eye”.

25.3.7

Both of these, Triṣṭubhs and Jagatīs, are recited.

25.3.8

Placed and established upon the Triṣṭubh and Jagatī, this sun burns yonder.

25.3.9

Thereby they visibly attain him.

25.3.10

Some indeed say: the Bṛhat should be the Pṛṣṭha-sāman of this day.

25.3.11

He who burns yonder belongs indeed to the Bṛhat.

25.3.12

Thereby they make him prosper with his own characteristic form,

25.3.13

saying: “He burns this greatly (bṛhat)”.

25.3.14

Moreover, that which is the Mahādivākīrtya is not a [regular] Pṛṣṭha-sāman.

25.3.15

Now these two are indeed the visible Pṛṣṭha-sāmans, namely the Bṛhat and the Rathantara.

25.3.16

Therefore, the Bṛhat alone should be the Pṛṣṭha-sāman of this day.

25.3.17

And if they should perform the Bṛhat upon a pragātha containing [the word] “sun”,

25.3.16_2

therefore, the Bṛhat alone should be the Pṛṣṭha-sāman of this day.

25.3.17_2

If, however, they perform the Bṛhat upon a pragātha containing the word "sun" (sūryavat),

25.3.18

the pragāthas containing "sun" [are used] according to the characteristic of this very day.

25.3.19

"Indra indeed knows by fame of this" is the opening verse of the uktha; "He is victorious, path-maker for the sun" contains "sun".

25.3.20

That is the characteristic of this day.

25.3.21

The Mahādivākīrtya alone should be the pṛṣṭha-sāman of this day; that is the established rule.

25.3.22

He who burns yonder is clearly this chant (sāman), namely the Mahādivākīrtya.

25.3.23

Thus they furnish him with his own chant.

25.3.24

Now some perform it on Triṣṭubh [verses].

25.3.25

Connected with the Triṣṭubh is he who burns yonder.

25.3.26

Thus they furnish him with his own form.

25.3.27

Some, however, say: "It should be on Bṛhatī [verses]."

25.3.28

Connected with the Bṛhatī is he who burns yonder.

25.3.29

Thus they furnish him with his own form.

25.3.30

Yet it is indeed settled: "It should be on Jagatī [verses]."

25.3.31

Connected with the Jagatī is he who burns yonder.

25.3.32

Thus one furnishes it with its own metre.
