25.9.1
Together with the morning litany, this day is to be celebrated during the day.
25.9.2
Together with the morning litany, together with the Patnīsaṃyāja offerings, they should strive to complete this day before the setting of the sun.
25.9.3
With 'I think of Agni as father, Agni as friend', the hotṛ begins the morning litany on that day.
25.9.4
Through [the word] 'friend', it has the form of 'Rich in Waters'.
25.9.5
With 'bright in heaven, the adorable [chariot] of the sun', it contains [the word] sun.
25.9.6
That is the characteristic mark of this day.
25.9.7
Concerning this Kauṣītaki used to say:
25.9.8
'Prajāpati indeed is the morning litany.
25.9.9
Not thus [should it be modified]; they should begin it just according to its proper manner.
25.9.10
That is what is successful for it.
25.9.11
Even as the Upāṃśu and Antaryāma draughts are offered each in its proper manner;
25.9.12
so that is what is successful for them both.'
25.9.13
The Āprī hymn is Vasiṣṭha's; with 'thou hast spread with the rays of the sun' it contains [the word] sun.
25.9.14
That is the characteristic mark of this day.
25.9.15
Some indeed say: 'The hotṛ for this day should be fair, with yellow-brown eyes.'
25.9.16
For they seek to attain by this day that one who shines yonder.
25.9.17
Just as one would approach a superior while bringing [a gift], even so is that.
25.9.18
However, the settled rule is: 'Just as he happens to be.'
25.9.19
They should accomplish the characteristic mark of this day by means of the recitation alone.
25.9.20
A victim to Sūrya is to be seized in addition to the pressing victim.
25.9.21
It is [offered] in a whisper.
25.9.22
If anyone should speak it aloud—
25.9.23
if one should say of him there:
25.9.24
'He will become afflicted with bad skin and white leprosy', so indeed it would happen.
25.9.25
These four victims indeed are [offered] in a whisper:
25.9.26
to Sūrya, to Savitṛ, to Prajāpati, and to Vāc.
25.9.27
Now the others are explicitly stated.
25.9.28
Then they undertake the three Svarasāman days in reverse order; the Brāhmaṇa explanation of them has [already] been told.
