3.10.1

Now, as to why he offers the three after-offerings:

3.10.2

three indeed are these worlds.

3.10.3

These worlds indeed he thereby attains.

3.10.4

Now, as to why he speaks the whole last [offering]:

3.10.5

Sviṣṭakṛt indeed is a firm foundation, for firm establishment.

3.10.6

Now, as to why he recites the Sūktavāka;

3.10.7

the Sūktavāka is a firm foundation, verily for a firm foundation.

3.10.8

Now, as to why he mentions Heaven and Earth;

3.10.9

Heaven and Earth are two firm foundations, verily for a firm foundation.

3.10.10

Some indeed say: "Agni has enjoyed this oblation."

3.10.11

He should not do so.

3.10.12

His deity turns away, thinking: "Again is there sacrifice;

3.10.13

he will give me an oblation again."

3.10.14

She turns back the wishes of the sacrificer if one says "this oblation".

3.10.15

Therefore he should only say: "He has enjoyed the oblation, has enjoyed the oblation."

3.10.16

Moreover, which deities he sacrifices to at the beginning,

3.10.17

in them he firmly establishes himself at the end.

3.10.18

Now, as to why he takes the name of the sacrificer in the Sūktavāka;

3.10.19

this is indeed the divine self of the sacrificer, which the officiating priests fashion;

3.10.20

therefore he takes his name;

3.10.21

for here he is born.

3.10.22

He should pronounce it aloud, even if he were a teacher;

3.10.23

thus the sacrificer does not fall away.

3.10.24

Then [the hotṛ] speaks five benedictions, and three in the iḍā: they are eight.

3.10.25

By these the gods attained all attainments;

3.10.26

likewise the sacrificer by these attains all attainments.

3.10.27

Then, placing his folded hands facing east upon the strew, he mutters: "Homage, approach!"

3.10.28

For the gods do not surpass reverence.

3.10.29

Now, as to why he recites the Śaṃyorvāka;

3.10.30

the Śaṃyorvāka is a firm foundation, verily for a firm foundation.

3.10.31

Moreover, Śaṃyu Bārhaspatya indeed appeased all sacrifices;

3.10.32

therefore he recites the Śaṃyorvāka.

3.10.33

Now, as to why he touches water;

3.10.34

water is appeasement and medicine;

3.10.35

it is appeasement, medicine that is performed in the sacrifice.
