30.2.1

Some say: 'They should be fixed,' calling them 'supports of the pressing.'

30.2.2

However, the established rule is indeed: 'Different ones [each day].'

30.2.3

For they enter upon a different day each time.

30.2.4

Then they recite [hymns] addressed to Varuṇa, Bṛhaspati, and Viṣṇu.

30.2.5

The metre of these is Jagatī, and Indra's is Triṣṭubh.

30.2.6

Since the metres are reversed for the dual deity,

30.2.7

they recite [hymns] addressed to Indra and Varuṇa, Indra and Bṛhaspati, Indra and Viṣṇu.

30.2.8

By these they recite along with the draughts.

30.2.9

For in this way the draughts are taken.

30.2.10

'Indra who sustains the folk, Maghavan, worthy of praise' is [recited by] the Maitrāvaruṇa; its brāhmaṇa has [already] been told.

30.2.11

Day after day, the closing verse belongs to Vasiṣṭha.

30.2.12

For Vasiṣṭha saw this third pressing for the Maitrāvaruṇa's recitation.

30.2.13

Therefore day after day the closing verse belongs to Vasiṣṭha.

30.2.14

On the third day, they bring forward [verses] in Kakubh metres for the Maitrāvaruṇa.

30.2.15

Thereby he comes under the control of the Brāhmaṇācchaṃsin.

30.2.16

Then on the fourth day, they bring forward [verses] each in their own metre.

30.2.17

Thus they proceed establishing themselves firmly each in their own metre.

30.2.18

They bring forward [verses] in Gāyatrī for the Maitrāvaruṇa, in Uṣṇih for the Brāhmaṇācchaṃsin, and in Anuṣṭubh for the Acchāvāka, for the sake of higher and higher [eminence].

30.2.19

Thus their metres increase by four syllables each.

30.2.20

On the fifth day, they bring forward [verses] in Paṅkti for the Maitrāvaruṇa.

30.2.21

For the fifth day belongs to the Paṅkti.
