5.10.1

He indeed attains the thirteenth month when he sacrifices with the Śunāsīrīya.

5.10.2

The year is as large as this thirteenth month.

5.10.3

Then the entire year is attained right here.

5.10.4

Now, as to why he sacrifices to Śunā and Sīra:

5.10.5

Śunā and Sīra are appeasement and medicine.

5.10.6

Appeasement and medicine are thus produced in the sacrifice at the end.

5.10.7

Now, if fire is churned, whatever is the ritual paradigm of the Vaiśvadeva, that is the ritual paradigm.

5.10.8

And if it is not churned, the ritual paradigm is just that of the full moon.

5.10.9

The full-moon [rite] is a firm foundation, for establishing firmly.

5.10.10

Now, as to why there are seventeen kindling verses, two butter portions containing [the word] sat, and two Virāj verses as samyājyā offering verses, the brāhmaṇa explanation of that has been stated.

5.10.11

Now, as to why there are nine fore-offerings, nine after-offerings, eight oblations, and the Sviṣṭakṛt as ninth:

5.10.12

he thereby attains the constellation-related Virāj.

5.10.13

The five common oblations, however, are the same, ending with the oblation to Pūṣan belonging to the Vaiśvadeva.

5.10.14

The brāhmaṇa explanation of them has been stated.

5.10.15

Now, as to why he sacrifices to Śunā and Sīra:

5.10.16

the brāhmaṇa explanation of the two has been stated.

5.10.17

Now, as to why he sacrifices to Vāyu:

5.10.18

Vāyu is breath;

5.10.19

he thereby places breath in himself.

5.10.20

Now, as to why there is a cake on one potsherd for Sūrya:

5.10.21

Sūrya is that one who burns yonder;

5.10.22

he thereby pleases him.

5.10.23

Now, as to why the sacrificial gift is a white [cow]:

5.10.24

he thereby pleases him;

5.10.25

his form is thereby produced.

5.10.26

Now, as to why they perform expiation substitutes and offer oblations:

5.10.27

they thereby perform a rite of auspiciousness,

5.10.28

for the appeasement of the sacrifice,

5.10.29

and for the healing of the sacrificer.

5.10.30

Now, as to why they consecrate the sacrificer with his own fires:

5.10.31

the fires are the chariot of the gods;

5.10.32

they thereby mount him upon the chariot of the gods.

5.10.33

By this chariot of the gods he goes to the heavenly world,

5.10.34

where is the world of the virtuous, where is the world of the virtuous.
