8.12.1
The heavenly world is, indeed, twelve days away from one who dwells within [the realm of men].
8.12.2
He who increases [by one teat] once,
8.12.3
that is just as if one were to follow after a caravan that has departed for one night;
8.12.4
he who [increases] a second time,
8.12.5
that is just as [if it had departed for] two nights;
8.12.6
with a third, he is left behind;
8.12.7
he does not attain the heavenly worlds.
8.12.8
"He might even follow after," Paiṅgya used to say,
8.12.9
"yet he should not increase [the teats].
8.12.10
Wherever he might desire,
8.12.11
having gone thither first, he should settle in the heavenly world."
8.12.12
"Completion is better," Kauṣītaki used to say.
8.12.13
They should bring curd for him as the portion of the sovereign, not for the vow-drink.
8.12.14
Curd is Soma.
8.12.15
His portion becomes uninterrupted; he attains [everything].
8.12.16
And if they buy together [i.e., condense the days],
8.12.17
whichever is the middle Upasad,
8.12.18
with that, either of the two [parties] should perform for two days.
8.12.19
For it is an insertion,
8.12.20
by virtue of the abode of this intermediate world.
8.12.21
Then he ascends without conflict; then he ascends without conflict.
