Kauṣītaki Upaniṣad 1.1

1.1.1

citro ha vai gārgyāyaṇir yakṣyamāṇa āruṇiṃ vavre /

1. Citra Gāṅgyāyani, verily, being about to sacrifice, chose Āruṇi. He then dispatched his son Śvetaketu, saying: 'You perform the sacrifice.' When he had arrived, he asked of him: 'Son of Gautama, is there a conclusion [of transmigration] in the world in which you will put me? Or is there any road? Will you put me in its world?'

sa ha putraṃ śvetaketuṃ prajighāya yājayeti /

taṃ hāsīnaṃ papraccha /

1.1.4

gautamasya putrāsti saṃvṛtaṃ loke yasmin mā dhāsyasy anyatamo vādhvā tasya /

1.1.5

māloke dhāsyasīti /

1.1.6

sa hovāca nāham etad veda /

Then he said: 'I know not this. However, let me ask the teacher.' Then he went to his father and asked: 'Thus and so has he asked me. How should I answer?'

hantācāryaṃ pṛcchānīti /

sa ha pitaram āsādya papracchetīti māprākṣīt kathaṃ pratibravāṇīti /

sa hovācāham apy etan na veda /

Then he said: 'I too know not this. Let us pursue Veda-study (svādhyāya) at [his] residence, and get what our betters give. Come! Let us both go.'

1.1.10

sadasy eva vayaṃ svādhyāyam adhītya harāmahe yan naḥ pare dadati /

1.1.11

ehy ubhau gamiṣyāva iti /

1.1.12

sa ha samitpāṇiś citraṃ gārgyāyaṇiṃ praticakrama /

Then, fuel in hand, he returned to Citra Gāṅgyāyani, and said: 'Let me come to you as a pupil.'

1.1.13

upāyānīti taṃ hovāca /

1.1.14

brahmārgho 'si gautama yo na mānam upāgāḥ /

To him then he said: 'Worthy of sacred knowledge (brahma) are you, O Gautama, who have gone not unto conceit. Come! I will cause you to understand.'

1.1.15

ehi vy eva tvā jñapayiṣyāmīti //1//
