1.10.47
eka ekam sapta rātreṇa punāti vidhivat kṛtaḥ./
tvag asṛk piśita asthīni medo majjānam eva ca.//
Performed according to the rule, every seven nights it purifies one by one:
skin, blood, flesh, and bones, and also fat and marrow.
1.10.48
eka ekam sapta rātram tu tvag ādīnām viśodhanam./
ebhir vratair vipūta ātmā kuryāt karmāṇy atandritaḥ.//
Seven nights is the purification of each one, beginning with the skin.
With his self thoroughly purified by these observances, he should unweariedly perform rites.
1.10.49
iṣṭān kāmān tataḥ sarvān avāpnoti na saṃśayaḥ./
kaṇa piṇyāka takrāṇām eka ekam śodhanam bhavet.//
He then obtains all desired wishes, there is no doubt.
Broken grains, oil-cake, and buttermilk should each be a means of purification.
1.10.50
śuddha ātmā karma kurvīta satya vādī jita indriyaḥ./
evam śuddhasya karmāṇi mantrair vakṣyāmi tadyathā.//
With a purified self, truthful in speech, his senses mastered, he should perform the rite.
I shall explain the rites with mantras for one thus purified, as follows:
1.10.51
trirātram eva upavased āditaḥ sarva karmaṇām./
trīṇi naktāni vā kuryāt tataḥ karma samārabhet.//
He should fast for three nights at the beginning of all rites;
or he should observe three nights [eating only at night]; then he should undertake the rite.
