Under "prācāṃ ṣpha-" (P. 4.1.17): the mention of taddhita is for the sake of assigning the technical name prātipadika (nominal stem). Objection: Even without that, ṅīṣ will occur simply through the force of making it ṣ-it. If so, then the mention of taddhita indicates that ṣpha occurs somewhere even after a base ending in iñ. Because in the case of a base ending in yañ, the form is accomplished even by lengthening of homogeneous vowels, the elision by "yasyeti" is unnecessary. By this, what will be stated as "āsurerupasaṃkhyānam" ('addition of Āsuri') is accomplished.
Under "āyane-" (P. 7.1.2): the 'i' of the phakāra, etc., is for the sake of pronunciation. The nakāra of āyan and īn does not have the technical name it, on the strength of the affix phin having been made ñ-it.
Under "kauravya-" (P. 4.1.19): How then does Bhaṭṭi say: "yadyasau kūpamāṇḍūki tavaitāvatikaḥ smayaḥ" ('If, O female well-frog, your pride is so great...')? On this they say: because of its companionship with kauravya, only māṇḍūka ending in a patronymic affix is accepted here; but here, it is aṇ by "tasyedam" in the sense of 'this is the wife of Maṇḍūka'.
On kumārī ('young girl'): the word denotes only the first stage of life, not being conditioned by unmarried status. But the usage vṛddhakumārī ('old spinster') is figurative.
