the ocean was churned for nectar by the gods and demons."
Here, nectar is the primary \[object\], because it is the desired result, whereas the ocean is secondary.
As for what commentators say—that the inclusion of pac ('to cook') among double-object roots lacks authority—that is due to haste. To explain: the double-object nature of pac is obtained in the vārttika "duhipacyorbahulaṃ sakarmakayoḥ" on the sūtra "karmavatkarmaṇā" and in its Bhāṣya. It has been made clear by Kaiyaṭa and Haradatta in that very place. Mādhava also says: "Of ji, of kṛṣ, of manth, of muṣ, of gaṇḍ, of pac", and so forth. And he gave the example: "He cooks rice from grain" (taṇḍulānodanaṃ pacati).
As for what was stated by Haradatta on the sūtra "akathitaṃ ca"—if the word akathita were taken in the sense of 'non-primary', then in the sentence "He milks milk with his hand into a bronze vessel" (pāṇinā kāṃsyapātryāṃ dogdhi payaḥ), it would also apply to the hand and the bronze vessel, but pac and so on are the domain of the instrument and the locus, for this \[rule\] has no application there due to the enumeration of duh and so forth—that is with reference to another view. Otherwise, there would be contradiction with the cited texts of his own and of others; but let that be for now.
