kartr̥karaṇayōs tr̥tīyā.
The third [case inflection occurs] for agent and instrument.
4.5.2
yaḥ kriyāṁ karōti sa kartā. sādhakatamaṁ karaṇaṁ. tasmin kartari karaṇē ca vivakṣitē tr̥tīyāvibhaktir bhavati.
The one who performs the action is the agent. The most effective means is the instrument. When that agent or instrument is intended to be expressed, the third case inflection occurs.
