vans-yansōr upāntyasya dīrghō vā.
The penultimate of [stems ending in] vans and yans is optionally long.
5.17.2
vans-yans-pratyayāntayōr upāntyasya dīrghō vā bhavati.
The penultimate of those ending in the affixes vans and yans is optionally long.
5.17.3
uttaratra udāhrīyētē.
