Karnatakabhashabhushana 7.27

There is reduplication of an inflected word in expressing distributive repetition, onomatopoeia, frequency, repetition or intensity of an action, proximity, haste, and the like.

When the meanings of distributive repetition and the rest are intended to be expressed, reduplication of an inflected word occurs.

In distributive repetition:

ūrūr [every village],

manemane [every house],

kērikēri [every street],

nāḍunāḍu [every country].

In onomatopoeia:

bhōbhōr ene [saying 'bhō-bhō'],

ghulghullene [making a tinkling sound],

gaḷagaḷene [flowing or rattling].

In frequency:

nōḍinōḍi [having seen repeatedly],

ōdiyōdi [having read repeatedly],

pāḍipāḍi [having sung repeatedly],

āḍiyāḍi [having played repeatedly].

In repetition or intensity of an action:

naḍenaḍeyendu naḍedar [saying 'walk, walk', they walked],

koykoyyendu koydar [saying 'cut, cut', they cut].

In proximity:

keṟakēṟage [very nearby / alongside],

kelakeladoḷ [on the very flanks / sides],

ide ide [right here, right here].

In haste:

oppisoppisu [hand over, hand over!],

māṇmāṇ [stop, stop!],

idircidircu [confront, confront!],

aṇmaṇmu [brace, brace!].

Because of the mention of 'and the like' [ādau], it occurs elsewhere too:

ene ene [as one speaks, repeatedly],

nuḍiye nuḍiye [as one utters, repeatedly],

antante [even so].
