38.1

When the Lord of Tirikūṭam, who placed the maiden of waters on his crest,
desired the Daughter of the Mountain, one king offered bridal gifts;
thinking, “I too shall make a bridal offering to maiden Gaṅgā,”
as if the kind Mother, Heavenly Gaṅgā,
were setting out to inspect the bridal feast,
turning the golden sky everywhere into their own color,
flocks of herons roamed the world. (They are coming)

38.2

The quail comes, the watercock comes,
the crow comes, and the crested hoopoe;
the blue rock pigeon and the peacock come;
as another rank, the flocks of cranes—
like the sacred pearl canopy once given to Lord Sambandar,
who floated his palm leaf against the current
to impale on long stakes the massed Jainas
who held Kūṭal in their grip and kept Śaivism out— (They are coming)

38.3

White pigeons, cakora birds, and owls,
kingfishers and woodpeckers,
parakeets and flocks of five-colored parrots,
peafowl and common mynas,
snipes, sparrows, drongos, and anṟil birds,
gathering with loud cries in four or five kinds,
resembling the wild-paddy silk sari touched and worn
by the Consort of the Trident-and-Skull Bearer who dances leaping! (They are coming)
..
Ciṅkaṉ speaks
Koccakak kalippā
Like the Ganges river swelling into a thousand faces
upon the mountain of Kuṟṟālam belonging to him who accepted the conch with two thousand arms
and danced to the excellent thousand Vedic verses,
the lines of birds swoop down, filling many regions of the earth!
..
Rāga: Kalyāṇi, Tāla: Ādi
Pallavi
They are alighting, sir, the birds are alighting, sir!
Anupallavi
They are alighting, sir, the swooping birds,
upon the sandalwood forest, upon the ceṇpaka grove,
upon the temple lake of maiden Kuḻalvāymoḻi,
like the flood of the Ciṟṟāṟu river belonging to the Lord of Kuṟṟālam! (They are alighting)
