He said: Under the obedience of this Sultan are the people of Qarājil \[1\]; they have from him a truce and safe-conduct in return for tributes conveyed to him from them, from which wealth accrues. This mountain of Qarājil has gold mines, from which countless \[gold\] is obtained. All these lands, by land and sea, are united \[2\] under their present Sultan, except the islands far out in the sea. As for the coast, not a span's breadth \[3\] remains that is not in his hand; he opened its locked places (Manuscript p. 11) and took possession of its strongholds. He now has the coinage \[4\] and the Friday sermon (khuṭba) throughout all these lands, with no partner sharing them with him.
