The learned, blessed shaykh, the remnant of the noble forebears, Mubārak b. Maḥmūd al-Anbāʾī, a descendant of Majdshāh, told me that Ḥājib Khāṣṣī \[1\] — may God grant benefit through his blessings, he being trustworthy and reliable, and acquainted with all that he relates because of his standing and that of his forebears among the kings of these lands — said: This kingdom is extremely vast. Its length is three \[2\] years \[of travel\], and its breadth from Sūmanāt \[3\] and Sarandīb \[4\] to Ghazna, and its length from the plain facing Aden to the Barrier of Alexander, where the Indian Sea issues from the Encircling Ocean \[5\]. Its cities, with their pulpits and thrones, its districts, villages, estates, rural districts \[6\] and markets, are contiguous, with no wasteland cutting them off or separating them.
