> once they heard it. But when he spread this among the people, the amīrs rejected it; each of them beat his drum and rose in revolt, so that not one remained with him. They wanted to kill him, but Malik Tamūr prevented them and stood in his defence, and he fled to his father with ten horsemen whom he called yārān-i muwāfiq, meaning "the agreeable companions". His father gave him money and troops and ordered him to return to Tiling, and he returned there. His father learned what he had intended, and he put the jurist ʿUbayd to death. He gave orders concerning Malik Kāfūr the muhrdār: a stake with a sharpened point was planted in the ground for him and driven into his neck until its tip came out of his side, with his head downward, and he was left in that state. The remaining amīrs fled to Sultan Shams al-Dīn, son of Sultan Nāṣir al-Dīn, son of Sultan Ghiyāth al-Dīn Balban, and settled with him.
