Ḥājī Kāwun was the cousin of Sultan Abū Saʿīd, king of al-ʿIrāq, and his brother Mūsā was king over part of the land of al-ʿIrāq. Ḥājī Kāwun came to the Sultan, who received him honourably and gave him lavish gifts. One day I saw him when the vizier Khwāja Jahān had brought his present, which included three trays, one filled with rubies, another filled with emeralds and another filled with pearls; Ḥājī Kāwun was present, and [the Sultan] gave him a generous share of it, and then also gave him a large sum of money. He departed, making for al-ʿIrāq, and found that his brother had died and that Sulaymān Khān had been appointed in his place. He claimed his brother's inheritance and laid claim to the kingship, and the troops swore allegiance to him. He made for the land of Fārs and halted at the city of Shūnkāra, where the imām ʿAḍud al-Dīn, mentioned above, lives. When he halted outside it, its shaykhs delayed coming out to him for a while and then came out. He said to them, 'What kept you from hastening out to swear allegiance to us?' They made excuses to him, but he did not accept them, and said to his armed men, 'Qılıch tıkhar', which means 'Draw swords'. They drew them and struck off their heads, and they were a large company. The amīrs who were neighbours of this city heard of what he had done and were angered by it, and they wrote to Shams al-Dīn al-Simnānī, one of the great jurist-amīrs, informing him of what had befallen the people of Shūnkāra and asking him for help in fighting him. He set out with his troops, and the people of the land gathered, seeking vengeance for the shaykhs whom Ḥājī Kāwun had killed. They fell upon his army by night and routed it. He was in the city's palace; they surrounded him, and he hid in the privy, but they found him, cut off his head and sent it to Sulaymān Khān, and they distributed his limbs among the towns, to gratify their vengeance on him!
