Shaykh ʿAlī al-Ḥaydarī lived in the city of Kanbāya on the coast of Hind. He was of great standing, well known and of wide renown. Merchants at sea would make many vows to him, and when they arrived they would begin by greeting him. He had insight into their affairs: sometimes one of them would make a vow and then regret it, and when he came to greet the shaykh, the shaykh would tell him what he had vowed to him and order him to fulfil it. This happened to him many times and he became famous for it.
12.45.2
When the qāḍī Jalāl al-Afghānī and his tribe rebelled in those parts, it reached the Sultan that Shaykh al-Ḥaydarī had prayed for the qāḍī Jalāl and given him his cap (shāshiya) from his own head, and it was also said that he had sworn allegiance to him. When the Sultan went out against them in person and the qāḍī Jalāl was routed, the Sultan left Sharaf al-Mulk Amīr Bakht, one of those who had come to him with us, at Kanbāya, and ordered him to search out the rebels, and assigned him jurists by whose opinion he was to judge. He had Shaykh ʿAlī al-Ḥaydarī brought before him, and it was established that he had given his cap to the rebel and prayed for him, so they sentenced him to death. When the executioner struck him, it had no effect, and people marvelled at that and thought he would be pardoned on that account. But he ordered another executioner to strike off his head, and he struck it off, may God Most High have mercy on him!
