It is one of the highest mountains in the world. We saw it from the sea when we were nine days' journey from it, and when we climbed it we could see the clouds below us, blocking our view of its lower part. On it are many trees whose leaves never fall, coloured flowers, and red roses the size of the palm of a hand; they claim that on these roses there is writing in which one can read the name of God Most High and the name of His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. On the mountain there are two paths to the Foot:

one is known as the path of Bābā and the other as the path of Māmā, by which they mean Adam and Eve, peace be upon them. The path of Māmā is an easy path, by which the pilgrims return when they come back, and whoever goes up by it is regarded by them as one who has not made the pilgrimage. The path of Bābā is difficult and rugged to climb. At the foot of the mountain, where its gate is, there is a cave also attributed to Iskandar, and a spring.

The ancients carved into the mountain something like steps by which one climbs, and drove iron pegs into them and hung chains from them so that whoever climbs may hold on to them. There are ten chains: two at the foot of the mountain where the gate is, seven in succession after them, and the tenth is the Chain of the Profession of Faith, because when a person reaches it and looks down the mountain, fear seizes him and he recites the profession of faith for dread of falling. Once you pass this chain you find a neglected path. From the tenth chain to the Cave of al-Khiḍr is seven miles; it is in

a spacious place, and by it is a spring named after him, full of fish, which no one catches. Near it are two basins carved in the rock on either side of the path. At the Cave of al-Khiḍr the pilgrims leave what they have with them and climb from there two miles to the top of the mountain, where the Foot is.
