### [13.17.1](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta.13.17.1)

> When the Sultan learned what the Afghans had done in Kanbāya and Dawlat Ābād, he set out in person, resolving to begin with Kanbāya and then return to Dawlat Ābād. He sent his brother-in-law Aʿẓam Malik al-Bāyazīdī ahead with four thousand as a vanguard; the troops of the qāḍī Jalāl met him, routed him, besieged him in Balūdhara and fought him there. In

> the army of the qāḍī Jalāl there was a shaykh called Jallūl, one of the brave men, who kept wreaking havoc among the troops, killing and calling for single combat, and no one dared to fight him. It happened one day that he spurred his horse and it stumbled with him into a pit; he fell from it and was killed. They found two coats of mail on him. They sent his head to the Sultan, crucified his body on the wall of Balūdhara and sent his hands and feet to the provinces.

> Then the Sultan arrived with his troops, and the qāḍī Jalāl could not stand firm; he fled with his companions, and they left their property and their children, all of which was plundered. The city was entered, and the Sultan stayed in it some days, then departed from it, leaving there his brother-in-law Sharaf al-Mulk Amīr Bakht, whom we mentioned before, together with the affair of his flight, his capture in Sind, his imprisonment, and the humiliation and then the honour that befell him. He ordered him to search out those who had been in obedience to Jalāl al-Dīn, and left the jurists with him so that he might judge according to their opinions; this led to the killing of Shaykh ʿAlī al-Ḥaydarī, as we have related.

### [13.17.4](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta.13.17.4)

> When Qāḍī Jalāl fled, he joined Nāṣir al-Dīn, son of Malik Mall, at Dawlat Ābād and entered his following. The Sultan came against them in person. They had gathered some forty thousand Afghans, Turks, Hindus and slaves, and had sworn to one another not to flee but to fight the Sultan. The Sultan came to fight them without raising the parasol, which is his emblem; when the fighting grew fierce he raised the parasol, and when they saw it they were dismayed and were routed in the most shameful defeat. The son of Malik Mall and Qāḍī Jalāl took refuge with about four hundred of their close followers in the fortress of al-Duwayqīr, which we shall describe and which is one of the most impregnable fortresses in the world. The Sultan settled in the city of Dawlat Ābād, al-Duwayqīr being its fortress, and sent word to them to surrender to his judgement. They refused to surrender except under a guarantee of safety, and the Sultan refused to grant it. He sent them food out of contempt for them and stayed there, and that was how matters stood when I last had news of them.
