The Feast of Fast-Breaking approached while the Sultan had not yet returned to the capital. On the day of the feast the preacher rode on an elephant, on whose back something like a couch had been set for him, with four banners planted at its four corners. The preacher wore black garments, and the muezzins rode on elephants before him, crying 'God is greatest'. The jurists and qāḍīs of the city rode, each of them bringing alms to distribute on going out to the muṣallā. A cotton pavilion was pitched over the muṣallā and spread with carpets, and the people gathered, making remembrance of God, exalted is He. Then the preacher led them in prayer and preached, and the people went off to their homes, while we went to the Sultan's palace. Food was set out, and the maliks, the amīrs and the aʿizza, that is, the foreigners, attended, ate and left.
