10.19.1

I saw him one day while he was preaching. The Qurʾān reciter before him recited: "O people, fear your Lord; the quaking of the Hour is a mighty thing. On the day you see it, every nursing mother will forget what she nursed, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, and you will see people drunk, though they are not drunk; but the punishment of God is severe." Then the jurist ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn repeated it, and one of the faqīrs at the side of the mosque gave a great cry. The shaykh repeated the verse again, and the faqīr cried out a second time and fell dead! I was among those who prayed over him and attended his funeral.

10.19.2

Among them is the pious and learned shaykh Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Kuhrānī, with u after the k, the h unvowelled, then r and n. He fasted continually and stood in prayer through the night; he had stripped himself entirely of the world and cast it away, and his clothing was a cloak of coarse wool. The sultan and the men of state visited him, and sometimes he secluded himself from them. The sultan wished to grant him villages from which he might feed the faqīrs and visitors, but he refused. One day he visited him and brought him ten thousand dinars, but he would not accept them. They say that he breaks his fast only after three days, and when he was asked about this he said: "I do not break my fast until I am in such extremity that carrion becomes lawful for me."

10.19.3

Among them is the pious, learned, devout, scrupulous and humble imām, unique in his age and singular in his time, Kamāl al-Dīn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ghārī, with the dotted gh and r, named after a cave (ghār) he lived in outside Dihlī, near the hospice of Shaykh Niẓām al-Dīn al-Badhāwunī. I visited him in this cave three times.
