of the kingdom, and the people swore allegiance to him, but Malik Nāʾib dominated him. He blinded Abū Bakr Khān and Shādī Khān and sent them to Kālyūr, and ordered that their brother Khiḍr Khān, imprisoned there, be blinded too; they were imprisoned, and Quṭb al-Dīn was imprisoned as well, but he did not blind him. Sultan ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn had two mamlūks among his intimates, one called Bashīr and the other Mubashshir. The senior khātūn, the wife of ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn and daughter of Sultan Muʿizz al-Dīn, sent for them, reminded them of the favours of their master, and said: "This fellow Nāʾib Malik has done to my sons what you know, and he wants to kill Quṭb al-Dīn." They said to her: "You will see what we do." It was their custom to spend the night with Nāʾib Malik and to go in to him armed. They went in to him that night while he was in a wooden chamber covered with woollen cloth, which they call the khurmaqa, in which he slept during the rainy season on the roof of the palace. It happened that he took the sword from the hand of one of them, turned it over and handed it back to him, and the mamlūk struck him with it; his companion struck a second blow, and they cut off his head and brought it to Quṭb al-Dīn's prison, threw it before him and let him out. He went in to his brother Shihāb al-Dīn and remained before him for some days as if he were his deputy, then resolved to depose him, and deposed him.
