The jurist Shams al-Dīn al-Andakānī was a philosopher and a naturally gifted poet. He praised the sultan in a qaṣīda in the Persian language of twenty-seven verses, and the sultan gave him a thousand dīnārs in dirhams for each verse. This is greater than what is told of the ancients who used to give a thousand dirhams for a verse of poetry, which is a tenth of the sultan's gift!
