The marriage of the sultan's sister and of his vizier's two daughters; the sultan's humility and at the same time his ruthlessness! The killing of those who rose against the sultan; the revolt of ʿAyn al-Mulk against the sultan; the revolt of the Afghans against the sultan

\[…\] of Hind and Sind, to whom we came. When Sultan Tughluq died, his son Muḥammad took possession of the kingdom without anyone contesting or opposing him. We have already mentioned that his name was Jūna; when he became king he took the name Muḥammad and the kunya Abū al-Mujāhid. All that I have related about the sultans of Hind is what I was told and received, or most of it, from Shaykh Kamāl al-Dīn b. al-Burhān al-Ghaznawī, the chief qāḍī (2); as for the accounts of this king, most of them are what I witnessed during my time in his land.

This king is of all people the most fond of bestowing gifts and of shedding blood, so that his gate is never without some poor man being enriched or some living man being killed! His stories of generosity and courage have become famous among people, as have his stories of slaughter and severity towards those guilty of crimes; yet with all that he is the most humble of people and the most given to displaying justice and right. The rites of religion are upheld with him, and he is strict in the matter of prayer and in punishing those who neglect it. He is one of those kings whose good fortune has been unbroken and the auspiciousness of whose undertakings has surpassed the ordinary, but generosity is what most prevails in him. We shall mention from his deeds in this respect marvels the like of which have not been heard of anyone before him, and I call God, His angels and His messengers to witness that all I relate of his extraordinary generosity is true and certain, and God suffices as a witness.

I know that some of his noble deeds of this kind will not fit into the minds of many people, and they will count them as belonging to what is ordinarily impossible; but in a matter I have seen with my own eyes, whose truth I have known, and of which I have received an ample share, I can only speak the truth. Most of it is, moreover, established by widespread report in the lands of the East.
