12.41.1
In the years of famine the Sultan had ordered wells to be dug outside the royal city and crops to be sown there; he gave the people seed and the expenses needed for cultivation and charged them with sowing it for the treasury. This reached the jurist ʿAfīf al-Dīn, who said: "This crop will not achieve its purpose!" He was denounced to the Sultan, who imprisoned him and said to him: "Why do you meddle in the affairs of state?" Then after a time he released him, and he went to his house.
12.41.2
On his way there two of his friends from among the jurists met him and said to him: "Praise be to God for your release." The jurist said: "Praise be to God who has saved us from the wrongdoing people." They parted, and they had not reached their houses before this reached the Sultan. He gave orders, and the three of them were brought before him, and he said: "Take this one" — meaning ʿAfīf
12.41.3
al-Dīn — "and strike off his head ḥamāʾil-fashion" — that is, the head is cut off together with the arm and part of the chest — "and strike off the heads of the other two." They said to him: "As for him, he deserves punishment for what he said; but as for us, for what crime do you kill us?"
12.41.4
He said to them: "You heard his words and did not reject them, so it is as if you agreed with them!" So they were all killed, may God Most High have mercy on them!
