### [12.42.1](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta~en-mt.12.42.1)

The Sultan ordered these two Sindī jurists to go with an amīr he had appointed to a certain region, and said to them: "I have entrusted the affairs of the region and its subjects to you two alone, and this amīr will be with you, acting as you command him." They said to him: "We shall only be as witnesses over him and show him the way of right so that he follows it." He said to them: "Your only aim is to devour my wealth and squander it and lay the blame on this Turk who has no knowledge." They said to him: "God forbid, O Khwand ʿĀlam! That is not our aim." He said to them: "You have aimed at nothing but this! Take them to Shaykhzāda al-Nahāwandī," who was the one in charge of torture. They were taken to him, and he said to them: "The Sultan wants to kill you, so confess to what he attributed to you and do not torment yourselves!" They said: "By God, we aimed only at what we said." He said to his tormentors:

### [12.42.2](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta~en-mt.12.42.2)

"Let them taste something" — meaning of torture. They were laid flat on their backs, and a red-hot iron plate was placed on the chest of each of them, then torn off after a moment, taking the flesh of their chests with it; then urine and ashes were taken and put on those wounds. They then confessed against themselves that they had aimed only at what the Sultan had said, and that they were criminals deserving death, with no right or claim for their blood in this world or the next. They wrote this in their own hand and acknowledged it before the qāḍī, who registered it on the deed and wrote in it that their confession was made without coercion or compulsion; had they said, "We were coerced," they would have been tortured most severely. They judged that a swift beheading was better for them than dying under painful torture, and so they were killed, may God Most High have mercy on them!
