If there is anyone at the gate who has come to the sultan with a gift, the chamberlains go in to the sultan in their order: the Amīr Ḥājib leads them with his deputy behind him, then the Khāṣṣ Ḥājib with his deputy behind him, then the Wakīl al-Dār with his deputy behind him, then Sayyid al-Ḥujjāb and Sharaf al-Ḥujjāb. They make obeisance at three places and inform the sultan of who is at the gate. When he orders them to bring him in, they put the gift he has brought into the hands of men who stand with it in front of the people so that the sultan can see it. Its owner is summoned and makes obeisance three times before reaching the sultan, then makes obeisance at the chamberlains' station. If he is a great man he stands in the row of the Amīr Ḥājib; otherwise he stands behind him. The sultan addresses him himself in the kindest manner and welcomes him, and if he is one who merits honour he shakes his hand or embraces him. He asks for some of his gift, and it is brought before him; if it is weapons or cloth he turns it over in his hand and shows his approval of it, to comfort the giver, put him at ease and treat him kindly. He bestows a robe of honour on him and orders money for him "for washing his head," according to their custom in this, in the amount the giver deserves.
