I arrived at the Sultan's camp in those days. The lands west of the river, where the Sultan was, were in severe famine, while the lands to its east were fertile; their amīr was ʿAyn al-Mulk ibn Māhir, and among them are the city of ʿAwaḍ, the city of Ẓafar Ābād, the city of al-Laknaw and others. The amīr ʿAyn al-Mulk supplied fifty thousand mann every day, of wheat, rice and chickpeas for fodder for the animals. The Sultan ordered that the elephants and most of the horses and mules be taken to the fertile eastern side to graze there, and charged ʿAyn al-Mulk with looking after them.
