13.16.1

The son of Malik Mall was living in Dawlat Ābād with a group of Afghans. The Sultan wrote to his deputy there, Niẓām al-Dīn, brother of his teacher Quṭlūkhān, to seize them, and sent him many loads of fetters and chains, and sent the winter robes.

13.16.2

It is the custom of the king of Hind to send to every amīr over a city and to the chief men of his army two robes a year:

the winter robe and the summer robe. When the robes arrive, the amīr and the troops go out to meet them, and when they reach the one bringing them they dismount from their mounts, and each one takes his robe, carries it on his shoulder and makes obeisance towards the Sultan. The Sultan wrote to Niẓām al-Dīn: "When the Afghans come out and dismount from their mounts to take the robes, seize them at that moment."

13.16.4

But one of the horsemen who had delivered the robes went to the Afghans and told them what was intended for them, so Niẓām al-Dīn was one whose ruse turned back on himself. He rode out and the Afghans rode with him, until, when they met the robes and Niẓām al-Dīn dismounted from his horse, they charged him and his companions, seized him and killed many of his companions. They entered the city, took the treasuries and set over themselves Nāṣir al-Dīn, son of Malik Mall; the evildoers flocked to them and their power grew strong.
