# تحفة النظار في غرايب الامصار وعجايب الاسفار 13.24

### [13.24.1](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta~en-mt.13.24.1)

During my stay the Sultan ordered that villages be assigned to me yielding an income of five thousand dinars a year. The vizier and the people of the dīwān assigned them to me, and I went out to them. Among them was a village called Badalī — with a over the b, a over the undotted d, and i under the l — a village called Basahī — with a over the b and the undotted s, and i under the h — and half a village called Balara — with a over the b, the l and the r. These villages are at a distance of sixteen kurūh, that is, miles, in a ṣadī known as the Ṣadī of Hindbat. The ṣadī among them is a group of a hundred villages, and the districts around the city are divided into ṣadīs; each ṣadī has a jawṭarī, who is a headman from among the infidels of that country, and a mutaṣarrif, who is the one who collects its revenues.

### [13.24.2](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta~en-mt.13.24.2)

At that time a batch of captives from the infidels had arrived, and the vizier sent me ten slave-girls from it. I gave one of them to the man who brought them, and he was not satisfied with that! My companions took three young ones among them, and as for the rest, I do not know what became of them. Captives are cheap there because they are dirty and do not know the ways of town life, and trained girls are cheap too, so no one needs to buy captives.

### [13.24.3](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta~en-mt.13.24.3)

The infidels in the land of Hind live in a continuous territory and in lands contiguous with the Muslims, and the Muslims have the upper hand over them. The infidels only hold out in the mountains and rugged places. They have thickets of cane; their cane is not hollow, it grows large, and it is intertwined, fire has no effect on it, and it is very strong. They live in those thickets, which serve them as a wall, and inside them are their livestock and crops, and they have water there from what collects of the rainwater. So they can only be overcome by strong armies of men who enter those thickets and cut down the cane with tools prepared for that purpose.
