13.32.1
During those days the Sultan had asked me about al-Malik al-Nāṣir, whether he rides camels. I said to him: "Yes, he rides thoroughbred camels (mahārī) at the time of the pilgrimage, and travels from Miṣr to Mecca in ten days; but those camels are not like the camels of this country." I told him that I had one of those camels. When I returned to the capital I sent for one of the Arabs of Miṣr, who drew for me with pitch the shape of the saddle on which thoroughbred camels are ridden. I showed it to a carpenter, who made the saddle and made it well, and I covered it with woollen cloth, made stirrups for it, put a fine cloak on the camel and gave it a silk halter.
13.32.2
I had with me a man from Yemen who was skilled at making sweetmeats, and he made some that resembled dates and other things. I sent the camel and the sweetmeats to the Sultan and ordered the one who carried them to hand them over through Malik Dawlat Shāh, and I sent him a horse and two camels. When this reached him he went in to the Sultan and said: "O Khwand ʿĀlam, I have seen a wonder!" He said: "What is it?" He said: "So-and-so has sent a camel with a saddle on it!" He said: "Bring it!" The camel was brought inside the enclosure, and the Sultan was delighted with it and said to my footman: "Ride it." He rode it and walked it before him, and he ordered for him two hundred dinars in dirhams and a robe of honour. The man returned to me and told me, and this pleased me; and I gave him [Dawlat Shāh] two camels after his return to the capital.
