13.41.1
Some time later I withdrew from service and attached myself to the shaykh, the imām, the learned, the devout, the ascetic, the humble, the pious, the unique one of his age and the singular one of his time, Kamāl al-Dīn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ghārī. He was one of the saints and had miracles, some of which I witnessed and have mentioned where his name occurs. I devoted myself to serving this shaykh and gave away what I had to the poor and needy! The shaykh would fast continuously for ten days, and sometimes twenty. I wanted to fast continuously too, but he forbade me and told me to be gentle with myself in worship, saying to me: "The one who drives too hard neither covers the ground nor spares his mount." I became aware of a sluggishness in myself on account of something that remained with me, so I gave up all I had, little and much, gave the clothes off my back to a poor man and put on his clothes. I stayed with this shaykh five months, while the Sultan was then away in the land of Sind.
