This infidel sultan had besieged the city of Rābarī, which lies on the river Jūn and has many villages and fields; its amīr was Khaṭṭāb al-Afghānī, one of the brave. The infidel sultan sought the help of another infidel sultan like himself called Rajū — with a after the r and u after the j — whose land is called Sulṭān Būr, and the two besieged the city of Rabarī. Khaṭṭāb sent to the Sultan asking him for relief, but reinforcements were slow to reach him, as he was forty days' journey from the capital. Fearing that the infidels would overcome him, he gathered about three hundred of the Afghan tribe, as many mamlūks, and about four hundred of other people, and they put turbans around the necks of their horses! This is the custom of the people of Hind when they seek death and have sold their souls to God Most High. Khaṭṭāb and his tribe went forward, the rest of the people following them; they opened the gate at dawn and charged the infidels in a single charge — and the infidels numbered about fifteen thousand — and routed them, by God's leave. They killed their two sultans, Qatam and Rajū, and sent their heads to the Sultan, and none of the infidels escaped except the fugitive few.
