Its sultan is an infidel called Dunkūl — with u after the undotted d, n without vowel, u after k, w and l. He outwardly professed obedience to the king of Hind but was in reality a rebel. When we sailed from this city we reached after three days the island of Sandābūr — its name spelt with a after the undotted s, n without vowel, a after the undotted d, ā, the one-dotted b, long ū and r. It is an island with thirty-six villages in it, surrounded by an inlet; at ebb tide its water is sweet and good, and at flood tide it is salty and bitter. In its middle are two cities, one old, built by the infidels, and the other built by the Muslims when they first conquered this island. In it is a great congregational mosque resembling the mosques of Baghdad, built by the nākhudha Ḥasan, father of Sultan Jamāl al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Hinawrī; mention of him and of my presence with him at the second conquest of this island will come, God willing. We passed by this island and anchored at a small island near the mainland, on which were a temple, a garden and a water tank, and we found there one of the jogīs.
