When we landed on this small island we found there a jogī leaning against the wall of a budkhāna, that is, a house of idols. He was between two of its idols and bore the marks of ascetic exertion. We spoke to him but he did not speak. We looked to see whether he had any food with him, but saw none. While we were looking he gave a great shout, and at his shout there fell

A specimen of Arab pictorial art, recalling many of the scenes Ibn Baṭṭūṭa describes in his travels: the scene of the ship, from one of the Maqāmāt of al-Ḥarīrī (446–516 / 1104–1122)

a coconut lay in front of him, and he handed it to us. We were astonished at this and offered him dinars and dirhams, but he would not accept them; we brought him provisions, and he refused them.

In front of him lay a cloak of camel's wool. I turned it over with my hand, and he gave it to me. In my hand I had a rosary of Zaylaʿ; he turned it over in my hand, so I gave it to him. He rubbed it with his hand, smelled it and kissed it, and pointed to the sky and then towards the direction of the qibla. My companions did not understand his gesture, but I understood from him that he was indicating that he was a Muslim who hid his Islam from the people of that island and lived on those coconuts. When we took leave of him I kissed his hand; my companions disapproved of this, and he understood their disapproval, so he took my hand, kissed it, smiled, and signed to us to depart. We departed, and I was the last of my companions to go out. He pulled at my garment, I turned my head back to him, and he gave me ten dinars. When we had left him my companions said to me, "Why did he pull you?" I said to them, "He gave me these dinars," and I gave Ẓahīr al-Dīn three of them and Sunbul three, and said to them, "The man is a Muslim. Did you not see how he pointed to the sky? He was indicating that he knows God Most High. And he pointed to the qibla, indicating his knowledge of the Messenger, upon him be peace, and his taking the rosary confirms it." When I said this to them they went back to him, but did not find him, and we set sail at that very hour.

The next day we reached the city of Hinawr — its name is spelled with i after the h, a after the n, w without vowel, and r. It lies on a large inlet which large ships enter, and the city is half a mile from the sea. In the days of the bashkāl, that is, the rain, this sea becomes so stormy and rough that for four months no one can sail on it except to fish. On the day we arrived there one of the Hindu jogīs came to me in private and gave me six dinars, saying, "The brahmin sent them to you" — meaning the jogī to whom I had given the rosary and who had given me the dinars. I took them from him and gave him one dinar of them, but he would not accept it and went away. I told my companions of the matter and said to them, "If you wish, \[take\] your share of them," but they refused and kept marvelling at his affair. They said to me, "The six dinars you gave us, we added as many again to them and left them between the two idols where we found him." My wonder at his affair was great, and I kept those dinars he had given me.

The people of the city of Hinawr are of the Shāfiʿī school; they have piety, religion, valour in holy war at sea, and strength, and they were known for this until fortune humbled them after their conquest of Sandābūr, as we shall relate. Among the devotees in this city I met Shaykh Muḥammad al-Nāqūrī, who entertained me in his hospice. He used to cook the food with his own hands, finding it unclean \[when prepared by\] the slave-girl

and the slave-boy! There I also met the jurist Ismāʿīl, teacher of the Book of God Most High, who is scrupulous, of good character and generous spirit; the qāḍī there, Nūr al-Dīn ʿAlī; and the preacher, whose name I do not remember.

### [13.64.8](https://indike.org/pramana/inf.isl.ar.rihla.ibn-battuta~en-mt.13.64.8)

The women of this city and of all these coastal lands do not wear sewn clothing; they wear only unsewn cloths, one of them girding herself with one end of the cloth and putting the rest over her head and breast. They are beautiful and chaste, and each puts a gold ring in her nose. One of their peculiarities is that they all know the mighty Qurʾān by heart. In the city I saw thirteen schools for teaching girls and twenty-three for teaching boys, and I have not seen that anywhere else.

Its people live by trade at sea and have no agriculture. The people of the lands of Mulaybār give Sultan Jamāl al-Dīn a fixed sum every year out of fear of him, because of his strength at sea. His army numbers about six thousand, horsemen and foot soldiers.
