13.93.1

I had married his stepdaughter, the daughter of his wife, and I loved her deeply. When the vizier sent for him and brought him back to the island of al-Mahal, I sent him gifts, went out to meet him, and accompanied him to the palace. He greeted the vizier, who lodged him in a fine house, and I used to visit him there. It happened that I went into retreat (iʿtikāf) in Ramaḍān and everyone visited me except him; then Jamāl al-Dīn visited me, and he came in with him, out of conformity. So ill feeling arose between us. When I came out of the retreat, the maternal uncles of my wife, his stepdaughter — the sons of the vizier Jamāl al-Dīn al-Sanjarī — complained to me that their father had appointed the vizier ʿAbd Allāh as their guardian, that their property was still in his hands although by the sharīʿa they had come out of his guardianship, and they asked that he be summoned to the court.

13.93.2

It was my custom, when I sent for one of the parties to a suit, to send him a piece of paper, written on or not; as soon as he saw it he would hasten to the sharīʿa court, or else I would punish him. So I sent to him in the usual way. This angered him, he bore me a grudge for it and secretly harboured enmity towards me; he appointed someone to speak on his behalf, and ugly words of his reached me! It was the custom of the people, young and old, to make obeisance to him as they made obeisance to the vizier Jamāl al-Dīn.

13.93.3

Their obeisance is to touch the ground with the forefinger, then kiss it and place it on their heads. I ordered the crier, and he proclaimed in the sultan's palace before witnesses that whoever made obeisance to the vizier ʿAbd Allāh as he did to the great vizier would incur severe punishment, and I made him pledge not to let people do so. So his enmity increased.

13.93.4

I also married another wife, the daughter of a vizier highly esteemed among them, whose grandfather was Sultan Dāwūd, grandson of Sultan Aḥmad Shanūrāza. Then I married a wife who had been married to Sultan Shihāb al-Dīn, and I built three houses in the garden the vizier had given me. The fourth, the stepdaughter of the vizier ʿAbd Allāh, lived in her own house; she was the dearest of them to me. When I had become allied by marriage with those I have mentioned, the vizier and the people of the island came to fear me and grew apprehensive of me because of their weakness. They worked to set me and the vizier against each other with slanders, the vizier ʿAbd Allāh taking the chief part in it, until the ill feeling became firmly established.
