32.1

The Sultan Yamīn al-Dawla wa-Amīn al-Milla had been watching the fresh news of the two brothers Ilek and Ṭughān Khān in the dispute between them. When he learned that their relations had broken down, he sought God's guidance about marching on Quṣdār, since its ruler had inclined towards estrangement and had failed to deliver the agreed tribute, priding himself on the impregnability of his realm and deceived by the inaccessibility of the roads leading to his abode.

32.2

The Sultan left Ghazna for Bust [in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year four hundred and two], feigning an intention to march on Harāt, until the news of his purpose spread and talk of his apparent design became widespread. Then [181a] he galloped towards the region of Quṣdār with the most formidable of his men, a gallop that rolled up those rugged mountains and difficult paths, so that the ruler of Quṣdār knew nothing until the Sultan's ghulāms were around his palace, before he could see the light of his day or tie his waist-wrapper. He cried out, "Quarter, quarter!", came out and did homage to the Sultan. The Sultan imposed on him fifteen million dirhams out of the revenues of his province that he had withheld; he accepted it and paid most of it.

32.3

The Sultan seized twenty huge, fearsome elephants which he had kept for his days of hardship and of war. He appointed someone to collect the money from him in full, and left him, after honouring his obedience and submission by confirming him as deputy over what he had governed and extending his authority over the bounds and districts of his province. [He returned from him] to Ghazna with his success manifest, his arrow winning, his flint striking fire and his hand uppermost: a favour from God Most High to those He chooses from the best of His creatures to cultivate His earth and make His truth shine forth. God gives His kingdom to whom He wills, and God is Mighty, Wise.
