> 11. The Tale of the Soldier, the Child, the Cat, and the Snake
> would become like a grain in the mill, I would choose annihilation over permanence and non-existence over existence, and this
> I would put an end to these hardships and deceits of separation, which are bitterer than poison and more unpalatable than death,
> and upon the dust of my slender beloved—who lies asleep in the earth and grave like an upright cypress,
> and is hidden in darkness like the moon—I would sacrifice my precious self;
> for enduring death would seem easier than a life passed in separation from loved ones.
> And from this they have said that lovers are short-lived, because the affliction of absence and the torment of separation dissolve their subtle spirit;
> part of it is expelled like water through the conduits of tears,
> and part is brought out in the form of vapor by way of sighs through the passage of breath, and gradually brings about dissolution.
> And whoever among the Arabs fell in love,
> surrendered their soul to the bailiffs of the prefect of love in the freshness of youth and the prime of life;
> just as Majnūn in separation from Laylā, and Kuthayyir in love for ʿAzza, and Wāmiq in affection for ʿAdhrāʾ.
> And one of the tribe of Banū Tamīm was asked: 'Why is it that in your tribe,
> whoever falls in love dies?' He said: 'Because in our hearts there is tenderness, and in our women there is chastity:'
