> One cannot lay hands on time; / the foot of life cannot stand firm.
> Hope is a fair-faced beauty; / it is not held in contempt in heart or eye.
> Live gladly, for at the wedding of death / the hue of many an adornment fades.
> Every day from the break of dawn until the descent of evening, and from the departure of darkness until the arrival of dusk, he sat upon the seat
> of redress, and spoke on the welfare of the realms. And when the pupil of the days was blackened with kohl by darkness,
> and the mirrors of the upper world were polished by the burnisher of the stars, he would sit with the intimates
> of the realm in private chambers and say: 'The skirt of the night of union, before the dawn
> of parting rises and the auspicious stars of youth set and disappear into the west of old age,
> must be held fast by the hand of joy. For whoever in the state of farewell does not recall the delight of meeting
