² Grünwedel thinks that such Hellenistic compositions of Gandhāra as Garuḍa lifting up Nāga youths were direct copies ‘with Buddhist import’ of the ‘Rape of Ganymede’, a famous work of the Hellenistic sculptor Leochares; \*Ibid.\*, pp. 109-10, Figs. 61, 62. The epic mythology about Garuḍa’s taking off Supratīka and Vibhāvasu, already noted, may have some connection with these Gandhāra reliefs; it is significant that the myth occurs in the Ādiparva, and it may be an interpolation.
